Love and Bean Stacks, A Family Tradition

She’s got a beautiful gift, Grandma Christine.  Well, actually she has many but her superpower is love.  She knows how to do that better than anything else.  It is just who she is. Grandma Christine is The Farmer's Mother.  Her love is generous and unconditional. You feel it from her when you enter her home. You can see the things she loves on her walls…her children and their children.  The rocks she has gathered on walks and trips.  The rocks her children and grandchildren have gathered for her through the years.  They are everywhere!  She loves beautiful art. And She loves Jesus Christ.  You will surely hear that once or twice while you are visiting her home.

We gather as a family most Sunday afternoons, after church, to enjoy a meal together.  It’s not like we don’t see each other, that happens daily.  But there is something about that Sunday Dinner that draws our family together.  It’s loud….very loud.  We laugh, we talk, we just bask in that family time.  It’s where we all belong, we are tethered to her.  These are the traditions that bind us.  Several years ago, she had a special table built.  It’s very long, there is space for everyone.  That’s what she wants most of all.  A place for everyone at her table.  It’s her children’s and grandchildren’s favorite place to be.  It’s in her home, around her, that her family feel safe.  And that “Everything little Thing Will be alright.”  Her favorite saying.

And that’s why we do what we do right?  Women have the beautiful charge of nurturing.  We also have families that are hungry, both physically and emotionally.  They need a refuge.  It’s in our homes and at our tables they find it.  This is why we do it.  This is why we plan and prepare so their hearts and stomachs will be full.  They are why we do it.

Grandma Christine’s most famous meal is Bean Stacks.  Very simple, not complicated at all, but it fills us.  It comforts us.  The ingredients are very often from her garden, or the gardens of other family members.  Another evidence of her generosity.
